Transforming visitor intelligence for CountMatters

Transforming a complex legacy system into an intuitive visitor intelligence portal. Spanning research, strategy, and scalable UX design, our AI-accelerated development took us from initial concept to validated market launch in 6 months.

With Day21, we found a partner whose creative capabilities far exceeded our expectations—and our customers’ expectations. Our new portal has gone from being a deal breaker to a deal maker.

About CountMatters

CountMatters is a technology and analytics firm specializing in visitor intelligence and "Counting as a Service." Utilizing privacy-compliant sensors and AI-driven analytics, CountMatters delivers real-time insights on footfall, occupancy, and physical flow to clients across the retail, real estate, and public sectors.

In late 2025, CountMatters approached Day21 to design a next-generation customer platform. While CountMatters possessed robust data architecture, proven analytics, and a clear business strategy, they lacked the dedicated user experience (UX) and product design expertise needed to turn complex backend data into an intuitive, visual self-service portal. They selected Day21 for our deep track record in self-service portals and premium digital customer experiences.

The challenge

CountMatters faced a fundamental platform hurdle: delivering raw data was no longer enough. Customers were frustrated by the lack of actionable visual insights, and the existing portal suffered from a fragmented user experience accumulated over ten years of legacy software development. Furthermore, internal organizational changes following an ownership transition 18 months prior meant Day21 needed to align diverse internal stakeholders while building the new solution.

The primary product and design challenge was solving design complexity across an extremely versatile, adaptable data interface serving vastly different client personas:

  • Enterprise Property Managers: Overseeing 500+ properties and shopping centers across multiple countries, requiring macro executive overviews, multi-region benchmarks, and portfolio-wide reporting.

  • Local Business Owners: Managing a single shop on a high street, requiring simple dailyfootfall trends to optimize staff scheduling and store hours.

  • City & Public Sector Managers: Monitoring municipal traffic, parking availability, and park activity, needing spatial flow maps and public usage metrics.

Doing nothing risked client churn, reduced market share, and an inability to keep pace with rapid industry evolution.

The solution

Day21 executed a structured product design strategy to bridge the gap between business objectives and user needs:

  • Discovery & Stakeholder Alignment (6-Week Sprint): Conducted competitive analysis alongside deep-dive qualitative interviews with key internal stakeholders and end-clients across both the Nordic and DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) regions.

  • Conceptual Architecture:Defined core platform modules—personalized dashboards, customizable reporting tools, and advanced analytics views—ensuring complex data streams could be tailored to individual client workflows.

  • Scalable Modular Design System: Created a flexible UI/UX design system centered on personalization and simple setup. This allowed power users to construct multi-layered data views while keeping the interface clean and approachable for single-location users.

  • AI-Accelerated Execution: Partnered with Apply Agency, using an AI-assisted front-end development approach. By turning UI design concepts into functional code within days, the team rapidly tested interactions, iterated on live client feedback, and brought the entire portal from concept to launch in just 4 months.
